Indonesia’s Central Kalimantan
province, hot spots have increased more than six
times, compared to 2022. Firefighters work through the heat and
haze, battling this seemingly unrelenting force. Authorities say conditions are
particularly dangerous this year due to the El Nino weather phenomenon. IN MY
LIFETIME, I HAVE SEEN THE FOREST SOLD, BURNED, CLEARED, AND, WITH IT, A WHOLE
WAY OF LIFE. I HAVE
BEEN CAMPAIGNING FOR THE RIGHTS OF MY PEOPLE AGAINST THE COMPANIES THAT CAUSE
ALL THESE DEFORESTATIONS. BUT THAT
CAN ONLY GO SO FAR, AND I STARTED TO THINK THAT I NEEDED TO DO SOMETHING.
SOMETHING NEW AND REAL. AND
THAT’S HOW I STARTED ON THIS JOURNEY THAT HAS TAKEN ME BACK TO MY ROOTS. TO MY
ANCESTRAL HOMELAND. |

So, for
you guys who want to help, you can join us at Youth Act Kalimantan. Let’s
see what we have here.
We are from Ranu Welum. We are working on the issues of
environment, culture, and the rights of indigenous people. Bye, Bye I GREW
UP IN THE CITY, BUT MY ANCESTORS, MY FAMILY, THEY ARE ALL FROM DEEP IN THE
FOREST. SO I’M ALWAYS WORKING TO SUPPORT THE PEOPLE THERE. AND JUST
RECENTLY, I’VE STARTED A NEW PROJECT IN THE VILLAGE OF MY ANCESTORS. |

Let’s
see what is written there. “Warning.” Oh. “You
are entering an area of coal loaded vehicles.” It’s
new? Yes,
it’s a new coal mining road. They cleared the forest to make a road for coal
trucks. Take a
picture. Wait.
Wait. This is
the new coal mining road. It didn’t exist a while ago. Does it
go straight to Talekoi?
Oh no. It means
more forest on that side has been cleared. EXTRACTIVE
INDUSTRIES AND DEFORESTATIONS ARE A BIG THREAT TO INDIGENOUS COMMUNITIES LIKE
MINE. BUT I
DIDN’T ALWAYS SEE IT THIS WAY. THE
GREAT FIRES OF 2015 CHANGED EVERYTHING FOR ME. |

NOWHERE
TO HIDE FROM THE POISONOUS AIR. IT’S
LIKE WE ARE IN A WAR. Long
live Indonesians. BUT
THAT’S ALSO THE TIME WHERE I DECIDED TO TAKE THIS SERIOUSLY. We are
Indonesians. We are the ones that need
protection from our government. WE
CANNOT WAIT FOR SOMEONE COME TO HELP US. There’s
obvious and strong evidence that fire hotspots are mainly found in areas
given to palm oil companies. I CAME
TO SEE ALSO THAT THE DEFORESTATION WAS THE BIGGEST THREAT TO OUR WAY OF
LIFE. THE
VOICES OF THE PEOPLE WHO SAW THE FOREST AS A WAY OF MAKING MONEY WERE SO MUCH
LOUDER THAN THE VOICES OF THE PEOPLE WHO LIVE IN IT. WHEN IT
CAME TO LAND USE, AS THE INDIGENOUS PEOPLE OF THE ISLAND, WE WERE NOT PART OF
THE CONVERSATION. |

This
forest goes all the way back there. Yes,
that’s the area we visited earlier. It’s not
even. Some parts are quite dark and
covered. Some are already cleared. Yes,
that’s true. Everything’s
dense here. Look at this. Yes. It’s
cool, right? THIS
FOREST IS A VERY SPECIAL PLACE FOR ME. GROWING UP, I WOULD VISIT IT, EXPLORE
IT, SEEING A LOT OF DIFFERENT ENDEMIC SPECIES AND ADMIRE THEM. RECENTLY
WE HAVE FUNDRAISED TO BUY SOME OF THE
FOREST, BUT EVEN HERE, DEEP IN THE FOREST, INDUSTRY IS CLOSING IN.
Is it
the company road? Yes, you
can see the company’s car. It seems
like there’s some kind of activity, look here. Looks
like some activity. Logging? It’s
mining, I think. |

total target is to get all this area. Left,
right, till the back part? That’s
right. This is
the ex-sand-mining site. I hope
the villagers want to sell it to us.
At least not sell it to the company. That’s
why I am a bit worried. In case
the company buys it first. Right,
we’re competing with them. Imagine
if we can protect a forest area this size. THE LAND
AROUND THE VILLAGE HAS ALWAYS BELONGED TO THE PEOPLE |

I’VE
BEEN RECORDING SOME OF THE DAYAK WAYS, TO PRESERVE THEM, AND I WANT TO SHOW
THE VIDEOS TO MY AUNTY. After
farming, when the rice has been harvested, it is then processed. After
that, ‘wadian’ is performed. Its
purpose is to give offerings to the spirits of the forest. A form
of gratitude towards the ruler of nature. Why am I
crying? You’re
crying. In the
past, children like you used to be involved in the arts, but not now. There is
no more playing like that. Why are
you sad? It’s sad
to remember the past. Compared
to now, everything is about money. In the
past, we didn’t always need money. Instead,
we could go into the forest to find what we needed. If there
was no food, we could go search for it. We could
dig and look for earthworms, then go fishing. But
things are not like that anymore. Nowadays,
it’s difficult to find any kind of food from the forest. Some believe that life in the past was harder because back then they
had to search, not buy. In my opinion, things were simpler. It was more enjoyable. THE
FOREST HAS SUPPORTED THE COMMUNITY. IT
HAS NOURISHED THE WHOLE CULTURE. |

WE HAVE 8 HECTARES OF FOREST. IT’S A
SMALL AREA, BUT IT’S A START. NT-9P-TA-14130120022. So, it’s January 2022. What is
this? This must be from a company. This is
a company survey marker. They are
crazy, marking someone else’s land. Why, though? It’s weird. Taking
someone else’s belongings. IT MAKES
ME WORRIED. I HAVE HEARD A LOT OF
CONFLICTS THAT HAPPEN BETWEEN THE LOCALS AND THE COMPANIES ON THIS MATTER.
IT’S ALWAYS ABOUT LAND OWNERSHIP. IN THE
PAST, WE PROTECTED OUR HOME WITH SPEARS, BUT NOW, HOW CAN WE PROTECT THIS
LAND? |

TEXT: LILIK
SUGIARTY, LAND RIGHTS CONSERVATION SPECIALIST
|
Hello.
Good to see you. Hi. I am Bilem. Hello Bilem. I am
Shinta.
This
part of the forest could be proposed for conservation. Here as well.
If you
have savings or a donor, you should start buying more land, little by little. Then we
can get the legal status to be recognized by both the community and the government. I NEED
TO SECURE AT MINIMUM 50 HECTARES OF THE FOREST BECAUSE THAT’S THE REQUIREMENT
TO BE PART OF THE PROGRAM OF UN DECADE OF RESTORATION. SO WE CAN GET ACCESS TO MORE EXPOSURE,
SUPPORT, AND, OF COURSE, THE LEGAL PROTECTIONS. How long
is the process?
I feel
with this information, the project is possible. It’s
very possible. But this
kind of information is rarely shared with villagers. That’s
the problem. People
who know, even those from official institutions, rarely volunteer this
information to villagers. Maybe
they are more on the other side. Yes, the
side of the company. Okay. |

WE NEED
MORE LAND. WE NEED MORE MONEY. WE ONLY
HAVE 8 HECTARES AND THERE ARE MANY TIMES I AM FRUSTRATED. BUT TO SUCCEED,
YOU REALLY NEED TO BE ZEALOUS AND KEEP
TALKING ABOUT THE URGENCIES OF THE WORK THAT YOU ARE DOING. |
10:17:32:00 |
Shinta on phone outside her house DAY FILMED - 21.09.2023 |
A sand
mining company, who put their ribbon marker in our area, there’s talk that
they’re about to make an offer. The
worry is if the people are tempted. That’s why I’m frustrated. The
solution is to secure more land as soon as possible. That’s the solution. What do
you think? Okay. That’s the plan when
we come back to Talekoi. I cannot
blame anyone if they choose to accept the company’s offer which is
ten times higher than us. Right
now, I feel a little bit down. Not a
little but actually very down and discouraged but I
will not stop here. I mean like, I always have the choice what to do next so I feel I
just need to keep going. That’s what I
believe the next right thing to do. |

WE’RE
MEETING BAPAK PERESTO, A LOCAL LANDOWNER WHO KNOWS A LOT ABOUT THE FOREST.
AND HE HAS AGREED TO HELP US ASSESS ITS BIODIVERSITY. Hopefully,
it won’t rain. BUT
SECRETLY, I ALSO HOPE THAT I CAN CONVINCE HIM TO
CONTRIBUTE HIS 12 HECTARES OF THE LAND TO BE PART OF THE PROTECTED
AREAS. |

SO WE
CAN GET CLOSER TO THE 50 HECTARES THAT WE NEED.
Now take
a look at these droppings. The
remnants of a bear? Yes, a
bear. It was heading towards that tree earlier. So,
imagine guys, this is a trail where wild bears and boars look for food, and
yet it is still being surveyed for clearance by a sand mining company. Yes. Here the
forest needs to be protected, so that it doesn’t get too damaged. Is it
possible for us to collaborate or somehow buy this
land from you, so that it can be protected? What do
you think about that? I don’t
know about selling. But what
about collaborating? If it’s
about collaboration, perhaps, yes. Perhaps
we can coordinate with you so that
you also know the size of your land.
We can help measure its boundaries. Yes, ok. It won’t
be sold. Ok. |

MORE THAN A PERSON. IT CAN BE FOREST, IT CAN
BE ANIMALS. Two
hands. IT’S THE
PLACE WHERE WE RECEIVE A LOT OF LOVE. IT’S WHO
YOU ARE, AND
THAT’S WHY I HAVE TO PROTECT IT AS MUCH AS
I CAN. All
done. |

AND GLOBAL CLIMATE CHANGE HAS PUT US ON THIS PATH.
I REALLY
HOPE THAT WHAT I AM DOING CAN PROVE IT’S POSSIBLE TO PROTECT AND SAVE THE
FOREST. THIS
WORK IS URGENT. IT IS A
BATTLE AGAINST TIME, A BATTLE
AGAINST A SYSTEM WE’RE ALL A PART OF. |
