Darren: So what’s the plan here
today Christian? C – The most important part is that we get attention to the climate crisis and precise political actions against that. D: And do you think these people are getting that message? Why stop traffic, what’s the use of that? C – Yes, so most of these cars are unfortunately still powered by fossil fuels – oil, gas – so we need to stop somewhere and we need to do something about the climate crisis so it’s an obvious choice. |

20 |
Christian IV |
Darren : Do you see a lot of growing public apathy for climate action, people switching off from the debate? Christian: Yes, it is difficult to convey the message that this becomes more urgent. Christian: So we never ever had this idea that we will be popular. The goal was to transport a message about the climate. And if we get hated by the way, then this is fine. |

Wolli are meeting other Last Generation activists ahead of a protest in Berlin
tomorrow Mirjam Herrmann advises on the legal
risks Last Generation activisists faces
on the frontlines Mirjam: We don’t have this one dictator who stamps out protests with his police, but for example, we have fee notices from 16 different federal states affecting lots of different individuals. This city issues a general order, and in Passau there are notices about special usage bans, which you’ll get fined for, in Munich, they’ve forbidden you, Wolli, from transporting glue In
Berlin alone, police
have spent more than 400,000 hours working on more
than 4,500 incidents registered against climate activists Upsot: We are doing a preventive
detention with short-term notice. While in the southern state
of Bavaria, activists can be held for
up to 30 days in preventative detention – meaning
police can take them into custody before they carry out a protest – it’s a
strategy originally intended to tackle football hooligans |

So I want to put this
to one of the party’s loudest voices against Last Generation Upsot greeting WOLDEIT: I think, and this is also my party’s opinion, that our share in what contributes to climate change is significantly smaller than what we are being led to believe. I feel sorry when I see those people, crying and screaming in a hysterical frenzy on TikTok and other social media, because they’re afraid that the world will end tomorrow. |
42 |
Woldeit IV |
DARREN REVERSAL Climate activists we’ve spoken with say
the AfD is enabling a culture of threats, violence and hatred, capitalising
on emotions about climate
change, in order to win votes. What’s your response
to that? WOLDEIT: I am talking about
things that actually happen. And when young
people glue themselves to a road, when they block airports, when they penetrate high-security areas, then I
can talk of terrorism. Darren
- there is a difference between civil disobedience, which is what the activists are
doing, and an act of terrorism. BUTT TO Why call them
terrorists? Within terrorism, we have different escalation levels. There are the terrorists who just want to kill, and there is a form of terrorism when I terrorise other people. DARREN But do you accept
that by using
the word terrorist
you’re encouraging |
|
|
hatred and potentially attacks against these activists? Woldeit: I understand completely that the language may sound too hard for some. But if I terrorise people, what am I? If I use terror, regardless of how I do it, then I also have to put up with others calling me what they see me as. I want to extend preventive custody to up to 30 days We need an extension of the video surveillance in public spaces. We need to enable more restrictive measure, a legal basis for spot checks. |

Christian IV Police raid on Christian reconstruction |
Christian: I was at my partner's house. At 7:00
AM the police knocked at the door. The daughter from my partner opened
the door. There were at least 10 policemen standing there with masks,
uniforms, weapons. |
45 |
|
Christian: The first thing I noticed from the raid was police surrounding my bed, handing over the court order. |
46 |
Cont'd |
Christian: |
|
|
The court order also said that they are supposed to take the cash I had at home, my electronic devices, phone, laptop, but also any indications if I might be a left wing extremist. |
47 |
|
Christian: I was really, really nervous of doing something wrong but they were the anti-terrorist group. So that was a direct connection to the previous language from politicians that we were the terrorists, so the terror Police has to come and raid our homes. |
48 |
Last Gen raids |
The nationwide raids were televised
across Germany, and
saw police seize computers, freeze bank accounts and shut down Last
Generation’s website. Investigators were alleging
the group had fundraised 1.4 million euros to finance what they called
“crimes” – but what Last Generation says are non-
violent direct action protests It was being alleged that Christian,
and other activists like
Mirjam, were all part
of a criminal organisation |
49 |
Christian IV Police raid on Christian reconstruction |
Christian: So whenever there's this accusation that you're a criminal group, they can tap your phone, search your location, radio, your home, and so on. So these are all typical measures for mafia, for criminal gangs and everything that happens underground. These raids, for example, or wiretapping of phones of activists becomes the norm, then I mean free speech is in danger. And this is the core of democracy, and I'm quite worried about this. |
50 |
GFX STATEMENT |
The raids sparked an outcry outside Germany |

rights to freedom of peaceful assembly.” |

activist group is laying the foundation for a campaign they hope will make them immune from the crackdowns
happening globally. NAOMI: 2025 is when we hope we will have the power and numbers to launch a civil resistance phase... That's what we’re aiming for. That’s why our goals for 2024 are about building capacity up to that point... For Rising Tide, their
strategy boils down to a simple adage
- strength in numbers… |

ALEXA: The most effective movements have mass numbers of diverse and everyday citizens. We know that like the majority of Australians are really scared |

The group aims to have 10,000
members before it launches its civil resistance phase - a rolling wave of
disruptive acts including stopping coal
trains and blocking coal ships from passing
through the Port
of Newcastle later this
year DARREN: So what strategy or approach will you guys use to grow your numbers. ALEXA: Rising Tide’s number one principle is that we target the problem and we don’t target everyday citizens. DARREN: So you don't piss members of the public off. ALEXA: So yeah, when we’re doing disruptive actions we are always trying to target either the fossil fuel companies or the politicians who are enabling this crisis to continue. |
