With big money to be made from the arrival of cruise ships in Vanuatu, you would hope that islanders would see some of it. Yet locals are left wondering where thousands of dollars from luxury liners end up.
"We would like to have one like this for our community", Kami Malili, the leader of Wala Island says, looking at a toilet. Built by foreigners for foreigners, they are off-limits to islanders. Now, after 33 years of independence, a small committee of islanders are trying to take hold of their future. But can they turn around an economy where even the Prime Minister admits, "everyone is corrupt"?
