President Thabo Mbeki has deployed the army on to the streets in an attempt to
quell the attacks spreading across the country. Angry mobs wielding axes and clubs hunt down immigrants from Zimbabwe, dragging them out of their shacks at night to beat them up. Locals complain that migrants get help from the government while they struggle to cope: 'Who is in my house? It is a foreigner. And a South African a citizen of this country stays in a shit place like this. Why?' one asks. This war of the poor on the poor has already claimed victims. Violence is still increasing in ferocity, leaving one to wonder where this will end.
