The Way of the Water The River Niger is the lifeblood of Mali and the Inner Niger Delta the country's beating heart. But in the face of rapid change, the tribes reliant on the waters are struggling to save their traditions.
"If it's already difficult today, what will happen in thirty years time?" Chief Yusuf's son Allai shares his father's anxieties. For those living in this fragile region, the pressures of development and environmental change are beginning to tell. But within the tribes you can still find some glimmers of hope. "Our task is to try and improve the country, in a way that is consistent with our traditions."
