Tackling LA's Chronic Homelessness Though LA is one of the US’s wealthiest neighbourhoods, the metropolis’s ‘Skid Row’ harbours a huge homeless community. As living costs have soared, homelessness has increased by around 50% since 2012.
Described as "worse than in a UN-run Syrian refugee camp", LA's 'Skid Row' has come under heavy criticism for its unsanitary conditions. "If we don’t power wash the streets we end up with what we had years ago when we had a tuberculosis outbreak", maintains officer Deon Joseph. With many individuals on the streets also battling addiction or mental illness, finding permanent housing solutions is becoming more important each day.
