Using coconuts to combat malaria
In Northern Peru, an ingenious idea is helping keep malaria at bay. They have few resources, but they do have lots of coconuts and these are being used to breed and distribute an insecticide to control malaria-carrying mosquitoes.
A lack of resources means that laboratory equipment is hard to come by, especially in rural villages - but there is a different solution for keeping mosquitoes at bay. Coconuts are being used as a natural culture for insecticidal bacteria, allowing communities to take malarial matters into their own hands.
