Yankees Go Home!
The Japanese island under US occupation
We take a look at local resentment of the US military presence in Okinawa. Military priorities trump environmental concerns, and the welfare of local residents.
This valuable archive looks back over the strained relationship between the two groups in this Southern Japanese island. Many Okinawans resent the US army presence and the pollution. The governor complains: "We cannot use our own land. We cannot use our own sky." Since WWII, when the landing strip was forcefully taken, the island has been under US control, and the stringent relationships they impose on the locals. Now, after the rape of a 12-year-old schoolgirl by US Marines, relationships are especially strained.
