The first overthrow of a foreign government by the CIA, and a template for all future coups, in 1953 the USA toppled the democratically elected Prime Minister Mohammad Mossadegh. Analysing the USA’s motivations, Professor Ervand Abrahamian says the coup was "rooted in the oil crisis".
