America's Quantum Leap
How close are we to a quantum breakthrough?
The quantum breakthrough will revolutionise technology, giving a military and intelligence advantage to those ahead of the curve. What will it take for the US to catch up with its global competitors?
βIt's complicated in the sense that it's extremely non-intuitive. It's counter-intuitive,β says University of Chicago professor of quantum engineering David Awschalom. This pioneering technology, a complete departure from conventional physics, needs vast sums of funding for research and development, which in recent years the US has fallen behind in compared to its competitors. "Without a workforce, it won't happen. We need to train students and essentially bring the industry up to speed,β Awschalom adds.
