Argentina: Football for the People
Privatising Passion? Argentina’s Football Crisis Under Milei
Gimnasia is one of Argentina’s oldest and most iconic sports clubs, and a non profit civil association owned by its members. Like many of its kind, it provides key community support, from assistance in natural disasters to running community centres. "Clubs have a social role that reaches places that the state does not", says Gimnasia’s President Mariano Cowen. But clubs like these are under threat, as President Javier Milei's deregulation plans involve turning them into profit-driven corporations. "Months after taking office, this government removed our subsidies for electricity and gas, causing rises by up to 1000%", explains Secretary of Franja de Oro, Daniel Pacin. As Milei promotes private investment, clubs that have long been vital community hubs now face an uncertain future. Critics believe this will wound not only the community spirit, but Argentina itself. In Pacin's final words; "when this fantasy ends, which will last 5, 6, or at most 10 years; the club will disappear".
