America's Gay Rodeo

Inside America's Longest-Running Gay Rodeo

America's Gay Rodeo SBS explores the world's longest-running gay rodeo, which provides competitors and fans a safe space to enjoy one of America’s favourite pastimes. But can it survive a second Trump presidency?
“If you wanna see some gays and theys get thrown around,” the Arizona Gay Rodeo is the place to be. But America's queer cowboys and queens are saddling up for a rough ride under Trump. Cowboy hat specialist Richard has been supplying attire to eager attendees for decades, and witnessed the first Rodeo — which didn’t go down easily in Arizona in 1986: “They had placards and were screaming all kinds of obscenities". While Phoenix has become more tolerant over the years, the newly-Republican state has begun to backslide. “Donald Trump has opened the box of hate”, explains Richard. Repealing DEI, and banning trans participation in the military and sports are among Trump’s campaign against the LGBTQ+ community, but for now at least the Rodeo ambles on.
