Stumbling blocks in South Africa's farming changes
Traditionally, African people were successful farmers. But apartheid laws ensured that agricultural land was owned exclusively by the white population. Now thousands of black farmers are given access to farmland through land reforms.
But, pressures on farming have changed along with outbreaks of foot and mouth: "In the old days we used to wear goat's skin in the fields and look after about twelve cows". The northern Free State is conservative and some whites people were sceptical to the reform. But, as one young white farmer says; "The farmers giving support represent the entire political spectrum. The days of politics are over. It's all about survival now."
