Green Gold

Green Gold How 'green' is palm oil? Last year, more than a billion tonnes of CO2 was released into the atmosphere from forest fires deliberately set to clear land for palm oil plantations.
In a world hungry for energy, palm oil's potential as a sustainable bio-fuel has the investors excited. Indonesia has ambitious plans; "to be the number one" palm oil exporter. But to achieve this goal, it's felling millions of hectares of its remaining forests. Deforestation is now the second greatest cause of greenhouse emissions. "Big forests are being cleared out and converted to palm oil plantations", laments Greenpeace rep, Hapsoro. Local farmers, who rely on the forests to survive, are leading resistance to the plantations. As one farmer states; "We think it's a greater threat than illegal logging".
