Salvadoran Youth In El Salvador, poverty and lack of opportunity fuel gang violence. YouthBuild are attempting to give young Salvadorans the skills and support they need to transform their lives and their country.
El Salvador has one of the world’s highest youth homicide rates. Fernando’s neighbourhood is notoriously violent. "You cannot go hang out in the park. So I go home and stay at home in order to be safe.” Job opportunities are scarce, but YouthBuild, a public-private partnership, are working to change this. Jefferson graduated from their scheme a year ago and is now employed. “This program gave me the skills to handle the job”, he says.
