A shocking discovery in the Seychelles
1998, British researchers from Cambridge set out for the coral islands of the Seychelles. But the virgin coral they had come to study had turned to gleaming white skeletons, dead from ecological disaster.
The temperature of the sea in the area had risen 5 degrees above the normal temperature. This kills the symbiotic algae that lives inside the coral tissue. The coral dies a few weeks after the algae, placing the entire underwater ecosystem at risk.
