Gaza's Children of War
Childhood Under Siege In Gaza
Israel has pummeled Gaza in its pursuit of Hamas. In that time, tens of thousands of children have been killed, and the rest are trying to survive amid war and famine. “I'm afraid to go for aid planes in case…someone hits me or hurts me”, explains 10-year-old Siraj, who tells reporters that he had a good life with his family in Northern Gaza before the war. Families shelter in tents in an existence that’s become boring, uncomfortable and very dangerous. While the IDF reports that they are destroying Gaza in pursuit of Hamas, who they reportedly suspect are holding hostages, Gazans on the ground explain that they do not see Hamas or their weapons these days. “Hamas does not represent me, nor does it represent anyone among our people”, explains Siraj’s father, Ahmed. Simple injuries can spiral into dangerous medical conditions in Gaza because of malnutrition, filthy conditions and a lack of medical supplies. The sound of bombs and drones are ever present. “There’s no childhood left in Gaza”, says one 10-year-old.
