Ice Builders

The struggle of the Zanskar valley to survive extreme living conditions

Ice Builders A village whose life revolves around the Himalayan glaciers must adapt to survive. This independent report follows the people of Ladakh as they fight against climate change in their own way: by building their own glaciers.
In Ladakh, glaciers support a traditional way of life that has endured for generations. However, in the last 15 years these glaciers have become fickle partners for a village that “entirely depends on traditional glaciers,” reports local, Lobzang Wangtak. As a result of climate change, changes in these glaciers that cradle the agricultural industry has led to the disappearance of similar villages. In this way, villages like Ladakh are at the “forefront of climate change” Wangtak continues. Yet, the people of Ladakh wage a war against the death knell of climate change by constructing their own glaciers. Mixing modern and traditional practices, the townsfolk create “ice stupas [...] Buddhist symbolic structures”, that become both practical and spiritual monuments to endeavour in the ice.
