A Prayer for Democracy

A Prayer for Democracy Following the brutal suppression of last month's protests in Burma, some monks involved in the demonstrations fled to Thailand. This is their story.
"They arrested thousands of monks, dis-robed them, and plan to send them to forced labour camps", laments one monk. Now safe in Thailand, he knows it will be much harder for his colleagues to escape. "They are checking the border very thoroughly". He describes how overwhelmed organisers were when the demonstrations received so much popular support. "We were surprised people dared to clap and encourage us in every township". Then the military opened fire and started beating anyone near the monasteries. "A child's brain was blown out". From their safe house in Mae Sot, the monks have vowed to continue pushing for democracy. "This is not the end. It's just the start".
