Finding Our Voices

How is America coming to grips with the harsh treatment of those crying out in despair on the eve of a terrible war?

Finding Our Voices They were lonely voices swamped by a domineering system, deaf from the lust for battle in the wake of Sept 11th. Today America is a changed landscape with the war universally unpopular. The contradictions between now and then are stark, illogical, confusing. Today how is America coming to grips with the harsh treatment of those crying out in despair on the eve of a terrible war?
They knew that their country was violating every ideal it purported to stand for....so they put their lives on the line and attempted to stop a war. From the raw energy of street demonstrations, to interviews with compelling personalities, this is a film about eight courageous Americans who risked their lives, liberty and reputations to avert the Iraq war.

A grandmother who saw her son die at the World Trade centre on September 11th, 2001 struggles to provide him with a legacy of peace. "I felt it was an abomination that he would die trying to save lives, and, as a result of that, tens of thousands would lose their lives," cries Adele Welty.

A soldier who felt his sacrifice was based on a lie. "I was personally hurt to find out that every reason I was told that I had to go to that country, invade that country, go to war with that country was false," asserts John Bruhns. "We were told WMD, we were told an imminent threat to this country, we were told a possible link between Saddam and Al Qaeda ... it seems as if now that doesn't matter any more ... like it's a moot point. That bothers me."

Soldiers and politicians, activists and mothers, transform tragedy into hope, sacrificing everything to speak a truth that was often condemned as treasonous. "When you look at the whole issue of democracy, it's a thin line between being a democracy and being a fascist state; and it's easy to slip over to being a fascist state, when citizens cease to question, when citizens cease to hold accountable," declares Rev. Graylan Hagler.

Continuing in an oft forgotten tradition of American dissent, the eight heroes portrayed in Finding Our Voices remind audiences that citizens are the key elements of a democracy, and that it is our job to change the world.

Making The Film

We couldn’t have known that 40 years ago, a 13 year old girl’s bus ride with a group of university students would be the genesis of FINDING OUR VOICES. In spite of the fact that her father was a Lieutenant Colonel in the US Air Force Reserves, Laurel Jensen journeyed by bus to her state’s capitol, Denver, to protest the Vietnam war. Over the ensuing years, Laurel matured and changed, but the seed of activism had been planted. Years later, she held a job as a Naval Security Analyst. But after viewing plans of the militaristic strategy of dominance the US Navy planned for America abroad following 9/11/2001, she decided she couldn’t make her living working for the defense department. She hit the streets with her cameras. She traveled the US and documented with photographs and video, the frustration of activists with a wide array of concerns: womens’ issues, nuclear proliferation, racial and gender bias, and because it was 2003, the antiwar movement. After amassing over 200 hours of footage, she joined forces with Dream Catcher Films, Inc. to focus that energy, to craft a film that chronicled the active dissent in the US by telling the compelling stories of 8 outspoken Americans from very different backgrounds. The production team, determined to produce a movie free from the constraints and biases of mainstream media, began fundraising from individuals; we wanted to make a truly independent film. It took 4 years to complete -- utilizing clips from over 350 hours of footage and thousands of still images, plus war footage from Journeyman Pictures. And 40 years after the young girl rode to Denver on a bus filled with Vietnam protesters, she stood on the Colorado state capitol steps once again to protest a war. As she lifted her voice, she passed out flyers to marchers…flyers that announce the screening of FINDING OUR VOICES at a theater just a few miles from the festivities going on at the Democratic National Convention – the stage where Sen. Barack Obama would accept the nomination for the Democratic Candidate for the US Presidency.
