The Timor Gap

The Timor Gap The dispute over who owns the oil and gas reserves under the East Timorese sea is becoming increasingly bitter. With billions of dollars of revenue at stake, neither side is prepared to back down.
"We have oil, kerosene and gas in our sea that people want to steal. They are the resources that can help us fix everything," states East Timor's President Xanana Gusmao. But Australia is refusing to redraw maritime boundaries to enable Dili to exploit these natural resources. Instead, it wants to continue operating by the terms of a 1992 agreement which gave them the right to joint development areas and left borders undefined. Now many Timorese blame their own government for ever agreeing to these terms. "They are the ones who signed the agreement ... why should we blame Australia?" states one opponent. And if Australia refuses to compromise, it may prove to be a mistake that's impossible to rectify.
