Israel/Palestine - Waiting for Mordechai - 30' min 38'' sec [21 March 2005]

During Mordechai Vanunu’s imprisonment, his international supporters worked hard to ensure he was not forgotten. We follow them as they prepared for his release from prison one year ago.

“The Israeli government continues to pursue me,” complains Mordechai Vanunu. “But I don’t have any more secrets. They should let me go.” To his supporters, Mordechai may be a hero but most Israelis consider him a traitor. “He’s destroying the state of Israel,” complains one man. “I hope he’ll be killed.” A large mob of protestors gather to harass him as he is released. The address of his flat is leaked to the press and his supporters worry he’ll be attacked. As his friends gather in Israel to welcome him from prison, they find numerous obstacles thrown in their way. “We’ve had nothing but harassment from the Israelis,” complains one. Having worked so hard for his freedom, they still can’t meet him. Restriction ban Vanunu from meeting with foreigners. Mordechai may be released but he’s still not free. (Jenny Morgan)
