Jose Ramos Horta IV

A key interview with a key player in East Timor's independence

Jose Ramos Horta IV This key interview reveals the reconstruction agenda for East Timor.
Horta answers Asian calls to replace the Australian peacekeeping mission with a Malaysian-led force. "I totally oppose this, Mahathir has been a strong vocal opponent of East Timor's independence: this would be a political disaster." Horta welcomes the new Indonesian coalition, but for relations to "normalise" the Indonesians must return Timorese prisoners and bring TNI's Timor Generals to account for human rights abuses. In the mean time he wants the World Bank to allow a trade boycott of Indonesia by East Timor.
