A newly relaxed Myanmar and a ravenous Chinese drug culture has sparked a drugs boom that is spreading fast. With unprecedented access to China's drug cops this report exposes the struggle to contain the problem.
"Drug crime is high-profit, serious crime. Criminal syndicates will take desperate risks - it's a struggle of life and death", explains Commissioner Jiang Mingdong. In Yunnan a 24-hour police station mans the 4000km frontline of a growing drug war, but they're struggling to stop the gaps in a swelling tide. In 2005 around 8% of drug busts in China involved the drug ice. Now it's nearly 40%. In a single year they have made 133,000 arrests. But they warn it's still not enough. "With drugs coming in from overseas, it's impossible to stop them all. We just don't have enough people", one policeman says.
