Carbon Crimes
Bastoey Island is the centre piece of Norway's radical crime policy. Half the inmates here have committed violent crimes. But instead of being locked up, they help manage the island as a nature reserve. "We use ecological thinking as a tool to teach the prisoners responsibility", states ecologist Oeyvind Alnaes. Inmates grow their own food, vehicles run on biofuel and the prison will soon be completely carbon neutral. "In a locked prison, people get destroyed", explains prisoner Sigurd. In contrast, as Alnaes states: "We have been able to show that people who commit terrible crimes can behave like ordinary people".
