Cancer Hospital
The Brazilian cancer hospital doing things differently
Treatments for cancer can feel worse than the disease itself, and patients need large doses of morphine to deal with pain. Using radioactive minerals and oxygen chambers, doctors in Brazil are offering alternatives.
The pain from conventional cancer treatment can be severe, and high doses of morphine can be incapacitating or ineffective. The Ludwig Institute is pioneering an alternative using samarium, an element whose radioactive properties can help treat bone cancer amongst others. Hypobaric chambers, usually used for altitude training, are also in use with astounding results.
