Sarajevo Under Siege
Relentless siege by Serbian forces affects thousands
With Sarajevo enclosed by Serbian forces, getting into the city is not easy. Hotels once built for the 1984 Olympics now only host troops, including 'The Shadow'. He is a Bosnian Croat, once serving the Yugoslav army but now fighting alongside Bosnian Muslims to defend his hometown from Serbian forces. In the suburbs of the city, severe food shortages lead to long queues for basic supplies. The arrival of UN forces seemed only to complicate matters, as they attempted to secure the airport runway, with the Serbian forces remaining deeply uncooperative. "We can't wait forever like this", says one Bosnian fighter. "We don't think the UN's plans will succeed. Frankly, we're disappointed with them."
