Red Renaissance

Communism is back in the Czech Republic

Red Renaissance It's little more than a decade since the Velvet Revolution. But, already, the fledgling democracy has been derailed by political scandal, and disillusioned Czechs are now turning in their droves back to Communism.
In a busy backstreet pub in Prague, a group of young Czechs sit having a lively discussion. They are members of the budding Young Communist Party, and they express things many of their fellow countrymen are feeling: “Voters have been disappointed by the vast majority of parties. They promised things but the reality has been very different,” comments leader Zdenek Stefek. Voting for the Communist party is now seen by people as a way of punishing the Democratic parties for their corruption and lack of principles; in mid-year elections this year, the Party gained 200,000 extra votes and 40 seats in Parliament. People seem to have forgotten the terrible oppression inflicted on the Czech people at the hands of the party, when hundreds were killed, jailed and tortured. And with many of the same faces at the helm, how can we be sure anything has changed?

Contains archive footage of Soviet Invasion of Czechoslovakia, and of the Velvet Revolution.
