Spiriting Away Crime

A South African witch doctor claims his potions repel criminals

Spiriting Away Crime White farmers in South Africa are adding witchdoctors' brews to their arsenal in the fight against spiralling crime.
Mixing his potions from hyena fat and lion saliva, Seth Saroka is turning traditional medicine into a money spinner. He believes his remedies will keep the thieves at bay. And with over 40 white clients prepared to pay dearly for his expertise, he’s not alone in his convictions. Today’s protection job: a nursery on the outskirts of Johannesburg. Burying a white powder near the gates, Seth aims to create some bad vibes... “so that when the criminals come they feel inside their bodies that this nursery is not good.” The nursery owner is not entirely convinced by his methods, but it makes her staff happier and if it deters an attack it’s a good investment. The neighbours disapprove - after all this is Christian fundamentalist territory. Yet more are “dabbling with the devil” in desperate attempts to stave off attacks.
