The Price of Peace

A deep investigation into Tame Iti and the Urewera Four

The Price of Peace A terrorist training camp is discovered in placid New Zealand. As we get to know the charismatic leader Tame Iti, accused of running the camp, the depth of animosity between sections of the Maori people and New Zealand's authorities unfolds. Sent to prison for weapon offences, Tame''s legal case is mired in a legacy of colonial animosity. Over 7 years of filming, this wonderfully crafted doc unravels a complex national identity crisis.

The Producers

Director - Kim Webby is a New Zealand journalist with a deep connection to the Maori people of the Tuhoe tribe. She cares strongly about fairness and justice and brings this commitment to her storytelling. She lives in a rural hamlet in the isolated Tuhoe territory, where she works with the local people as a naturopath when she is not making films.

Producers - Christina Milligan is a descendant of the Ngati-Porou tribe and has recently moved into documentary producing after years as an award-winning drama producer. She believes that filmmaking is an important way for indigenous people to bring their stories to the wider world, and for citizens of small nations to have a say in a time of increasing globalisation.

Roger Grant brings a high level of experience in post-production to his producing, as an editor and VFX supervisor. His work ranges across features and television series, and he has always taken a strong interest in supporting emerging filmmakers, work that includes executive producing short films.

Making The Film

This film exists because of Kim's commitment to telling the truth about what happened in 2007 when New Zealand police raided homes in the Tuhoe region to arrest suspected "terrorists". She followed the story over a period of seven years and places the raids and their aftermath in the context of 170 years of political struggle between the Tuhoe people and the New Zealand government.
