The Feminicide Detectives

Mexico's epidemic of violence against women

The Feminicide Detectives In Mexico, there is an epidemic of male violence against women, with an estimated 10 women murdered every day. Now, specialist femicide units are being set up to investigate these horrific crimes.
Dona Tulteca is lucky to be alive after being violently assaulted by her ex-partner: 'He cut my hands and arms, perforated my lung. I told him, Marc you're going to kill me. And he said to me, "Yes”’. In the past, such crimes were inadequately investigated or ignored entirely. Now, they're investigated by the femicide unit. According to Special Prosecutor Sayuri Herrera, perpetrators often lie, alleging suicide: ‘They count on us believing them because society has somehow always proved them right’. Ingrid Saracibar, Minister for Women, says they are working to change the police mindset: ‘An institution that's as vertical and masculine as the police takes hard work to change’.
