Ultimately the Orange Helmeted Dutch rescuers pulled 12 victims from the rubble of the earthquake. It was a record for any team in the area. There are wonderful moments, as when after 96 hours a small boy is finally dragged from under the concrete piled above him. But also we see the tragedies, the woman so close to being saved, who dies just as the Orange Helmets reach her. Throughout, we remain close to the Dutch team and come to understand what motivates them and why and how they do this work. And what comes across powerfully is that earthquake emergency work is not as the news pictures would indicate, frenetic labours with multiple rescues. Rather, we come to understand, after the quake has struct most victims are beyond rescue, and those that remain alive are not easy to find, or help.

Director — Geertjan Lassche

Investigation journalist and documentary maker Geertjan Lassche (1976) makes independent work for mainly NPO (Netherlands Public Broadcasting). His films have been shown at international festivals, foreign television stations and Lassche won many prizes. He also makes television programs. He was named Journalist of the Year in 2020 for a program during the coronavirus pandemic. His documentaries roughly appeal to two styles: the essayist documentary and the so-called 'direct cinema'. When using the latter, guerilla-style filming method, he operates alone or in very small teams, following the characters close-to-the-skin to make the viewer feel part of the process. In his essayistic films, he immerses himself in subjects and persons for a longer period of time before he starts filming.
