One Month in Ramallah: Leadership Under Occupation
US denies Palestinian leadership UN visas as West Bank suffers settler onslaught
“You find yourself in a paradox because as governor you’re supposed to guarantee safety and security for the people, and at the same time, you're not even able to guarantee safety and security for yourself.” Governor Laila Ghannam’s daily schedule reflects the full range of demands for a high-ranking official in the organisation of Rammallah and El-Bireh, as she travels between government meetings, protests, prison releases, and the urgent care unit. “As Palestinians, our lives are made up of those killed, political prisoners and wounded citizens, because that’s how life goes under occupation.” Two weeks after Nakba day, Israeli forces storm the city of Ramallah, raiding the Ramallah and Al-Bireh governorate and burning down the city centre. Ghannam highlights the importance of internal organisation: “If we become unorganised internally as a nation… we allow ourselves to be defeated”. But facing an occupation which directly targets all of the facets of everyday survival, this proves a continual challenge.
