A traditional French shepherding community is shaken by the rewilding of bears

The Shepherd and the Bear High in the majestic French Pyrenees, the reintroduction of brown bears is causing havoc among a traditional shepherding community. An aging shepherd struggles to find a successor as the bears prey on his flock, whilst a teenage boy becomes obsessed with tracking the predators down. An immersive and visually stunning modern folktale about tradition, community and humanity’s bond with a vanishing natural world.

The Producers


Max Keegan – Director

Max is a BIFA nominated British-Irish filmmaker based in West Sussex. His projects have been supported by the BFI, BBC4, Sundance Catalyst, Impact Partners, Canon and Sigma. In order to make his debut documentary feature The Shepherd and The Bear, Max lived in the mountains for two years with the subjects of the film and learned to speak French from scratch.









Elizabeth Woodward – Producer

Elizabeth Woodward is the founder and CEO of WILLA, an Academy Award, Emmy, and Social Impact Media Award nominated production & distribution company that amplifies culturally and socially important storytelling. She was selected for Forbes 30 Under 30, DOC NYC 40 Under 40, Berlinale Talents, and is a Sundance Catalyst Fellow, an Impact Partners Producers Fellow, and a Film Independent Fast Track Fellow. Her films have been supported by Sundance Institute, Impact Partners, Film Independent, Field of Vision, The Gotham, Chicken and Egg, New York Foundation for the Arts, the International Documentary Association, among others. She is a member of the Producers Guild of America, BAFTA North America, the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, the Council on Foreign Relations Young Professionals Group, the Documentary Producers Alliance, and the Frontline Club.



Amanda McBaine – Producer

Amanda McBaine’s directing work includes Girls State, Boys State (winner, 2020 Sundance Grand Jury Prize) and The Mission, with Jesse Moss. She produced The Overnighters, (winner of the Sundance Special Jury Prize), Mayor Pete, and The Bandit. She won Primetime Emmy® Awards for Girls State (Directing) and Boys State (Outstanding Documentary). She is a Directors Guild of America (DGA) nominee for Boys State and twice shortlisted for the Academy Award for Feature Documentary.
