The Untouchables

The Untouchables Eighty per cent of the Indian population has no access to toilets. Traditionally, the 'Untouchables' have collected this sewage but one charity hopes to change that.
Renu Ujjinwal is shunned by everyone except her family. She can't even visit her local temple because she's an 'Untouchable' and collects sewage from households with no toilet. "These people are told day in and day out that they are the lowest of the low", states Sushmita Shekar from Sulabh International. By building communal toilets, Sulabh hopes to liberate the 'Untouchables' and tackle India's sanitation problems. As one former 'Untouchable states: "If there were more toilets, there would be no requirement to do this scavenging work."
