Singing The Economic Blues

How the Thai recession produced a cultural explosion

Singing The Economic Blues With thousands heeding the army's call to donate cash and gold to shore up the battered economy of Thailand, Thai pop music is satirising the calamity.
A young, smiling popstar croons: "My pay's been cut, my tears now fill the car I took years to buy as it's being repossessed..." Another popular song goes "Why does your heart keep changing like the Baht?" Most tellingly, credit card ads are advising people against consumption: "Wake up Thai people, don't be obsessed! Be more aware, spend less!" A humorous report on true human fortitude.
