Jean Calder

The woman risking her life to help disabled Palestinians

Jean Calder Located on the Gaza strip, "one of the more dangerous places on the earth", is the Elamal City Abilities Development Center, set up by Australian Jean Calder. Jean Calder is 68 and for the past decade has lived on the strip opposite the Elamal center. She has put her life at risk to help disabled and disadvantaged Palestinians. Although her center started off as a simple garage, it is now internationally recognized and helps to rehabilitate men, woman and children suffering from both mental and physical disabilities. She also lives with three disabled Palestinians whom she has cared for over the past 25 years. This dedicated woman tell us how proud she is to be in Gaza, and as long as she is "wanted and needed by the Palestinians", she has no plans to leave.
