Mourning After MH17

How a small village came together after the death of two popular citizens

Mourning After MH17 Dutch couple Erik van der Poel and Truike Heemskerk were among the 298 killed when Flight MH17 was shot down over eastern Ukraine in 2014. This is the story of how their village, Oud Ade, came together after the loss.
"The entire village was deeply saddened", recalls Oud Ade's deacon André van Aarle, but the 700 residents quickly threw themselves back into village life. Six years later, major questions about the crash remain unanswered, but the close-knit community is tighter than ever. "I'd never want to leave here", says Erik's mother. "People are so concerned and sympathetic."
