Thai High

Thailand's U-turn on drugs

Thai High Thailand is infamous for its harsh drug laws. But since June 2022, cannabis has been legalised for recreational use. Yet with the nation still struggling to control harder drugs, was the timing right?
Since the recreational use of marijuana in Thailand was legalised in June of this year, the cannabis business has been booming in tourist hotspots. It was a major shift for a nation infamous for its strict drug laws. 'I never thought in my lifetime that this would actually happen', says 'ganja-preneur' Kitty, who now legally sells cannabis. 'We go through the process of how to use safely and how to use responsibly', explains Kitty. The change in the law has been life-changing for many, with thousands who had been jailed for cannabis possession released the day the law was passed. 'I needed the money as I had a child and needed to buy formula for him', says one Thai man who was jailed after helping a drug syndicate transport a large quantity of cannabis. Though the legalisation is good news for some, others are not so optimistic: 'allowing cannabis is fine but it should have come with rules, regulations, advice and policies. Instead they legalised it, leaving us to work it out', says one Thai mother who runs a popular parenting and education site.
