Closed gold mines leave behind a lot of waste. When the wind blows, fine dust coats the land, polluting waterways and being breathed in by people. The effects are severe: heavy metal poisoning and respiratory diseases abound. Yet the issue of mine ownership, and who is responsible for cleaning up the mess, remains complex.
