Operation Smile

Operating on cleft lips in Kenya

Operation Smile A team of doctors travel to Kenya to perform surgery on children with cleft lips and palates.
While cleft lips and palates are operated on days after birth in Western countries, this is not such the case in Kenya. The issue grows greater given the huge social stigma that having a cleft lip or palate carries; those with them often struggle to find work or a martial partner. A team of doctors have travelled to Kenya to perform over 100 operations on children with the defect. ABC Australia follows their journey.
