Japan - Ise Shrine

The $500 Million Tree Ceremony

Japan - Ise Shrine In this postcard from central Japan, Shane McLeod strips off his city suit and gets into traditional gear to lend a hand rebuilding the Ise shrine.
He’s helping the locals haul sacred logs hundreds of kilometres up a river to the shrine which has been at the centre of the Shinto faith for more than 1,300 years. Believers think the spirit of the sun goddess lives in the shrine and also that it is the spiritual home of the Japanese royal family.
