Jerusalem has a history of over 5,000 years. Originally inhabited by the Jebusites and then the Canaanites, it is at the core of the world's three main monotheistic religions. Jerusalem became the Muslims' first Qibla, the direction to which Muslims turn to when praying before Mecca, when Muhammad led prayers at Al-Aqsa Mosque before ascending to heaven.

In modern history, the age of perpetual conflict began with the Montefiore Initiative, a call for a holy Jewish settlement within Jerusalem. The occupation came decades later in 1948, along with much strife and bloodshed. The city has not seen peace since.
