Saddam Hussein's chemical and gas attacks affect thousands of Kurdish civilians
Over 15,000 children were living in Kurdish refugee camps in Eastern Turkey, following Saddam Hussein's chemical attacks on their settlements. Many have lost their parents, and have suffered either physical or psychological trauma themselves. They give their own personal accounts of the horrific events.

Children cluster together in the refugee camp, seeking some comfort in each other's presence. Some as young as six have a sober understanding of the events that have brought them here: the words, 'Saddam', and 'chemical attacks', come up frequently. "Everything is dead", says one young girl. "The chickens, the dogs. My mother and my father too. All of them dead." Another child recounts the airstrike. "The aeroplanes came to my village. They bombed our village and we fled, but a lot of people, especially children, were already dead. We couldn't bury them because there wasn't enough time."
