Paul Rusesabagina sheltered thousands of refugees during the Rwandan genocide, later depicted in the film Hotel Rwanda. In 2020, he was convicted of terrorism, after being secretly flown from the United States to Rwanda in order to stand trial.
Rwanda has made a remarkable turnaround since the 1994 genocide, with one of the fastest-growing economies in Africa. Despite this success, allegations against the ruling party suggest a darker reality.
A quarter of a century on from the Rwandan genocide, the nation is still recovering. Attempts are being made to build a new Rwandan identity, but for many survivors the wounds are still fresh.
